Eccomi, il periodo è abbastanza vuoto di impegni di coltivazione quindi i miei post si sono diradati un poco.
Oggi ho pinzato le mie due zelkove perché ovviamente sono le piante che vegetano più di tutte e quindi hanno bisogno di più attenzione.
Mentre ci lavoravo sopra ho proprio pensato che sono le piante più adatte per qualcuno che vuole cominciare e che vuole vedere subito dei risultati coi bonsai.
La zelkova vegeta moltissimo quindi si può imparare a pinzare, si possono selezionare i rami in inverno, non ha particolari richieste di coltivazione, è molto resistente ed è quasi impossibile ucciderla...
Certo uno potrebbe scoraggiarsi a vedere una pianta che ogni tre settimane richiede una potatura ma infondo è proprio il bello della natura, vedere come cresce, come sopravvive e si adatta e con la zelkova tutto questo si ha ad una velocità che altre essenze non possono avere dando molta soddisfazione al proprietario.
Venendo alle mie... Sono molto arrabbiato con me stesso per come ho legato la zelkova su roccia, la pianta si muove troppo. Sto pensando che mi toccherà un rinvaso (magari meno invasivo) l'anno prossimo, durante il quale farò un paio di buchi sul fondo del vaso per poter legare meglio il filo e quindi la pianta.
Riguardo all'altra niente novità, avendo ritardato troppo la pinzatura qualche rametto si è seccato ma se conosco la mia pianta entro un paio di settimane si sara di nuovo un ammasso di foglioline...

Hi!, The period has no many works to do so my posts are more sparse. My two zelkova are obviusly vegetating more than the other essences so today i've pinched them.
As I was working on them I thought that this plants are so suggested for someone who want try to enter in the bonsai world.
Zelkova grow so much, so you can learn how to pinch, choose the better ramification in the wintertime, it's easy to cultivate, it's resistant and it's almost impossible to kill...
Someone could get discouraged from a plant that needs to be pinched every two or three weeks but otherwise it's the beauty of nature, see how it grows, how it struggle and adapt to the envrionment; with zelkova you can have all of this with a much more "speed" confronted to other species so the owner could be very satisfied.
Coming to my trees. I'm angry with myself for the fixing of the zelkova on the rocks, it's not stable at all and I'm thinking on a repot nex spring, in which i will create other holes on the pot to fix the wire in a better way.
Nothing from the other one, as I waited too much to pinch it some small branches have gone dry but if I know my plant I think that in a couple of weeks will be covered with leaves...

Un paio di foto veloci di tre piccole piantine di quelle che avevo seminato. Si tratta di due platani e di una liquidambar.
Per ora (ma credo a questo punto in maniera definitiva) sono le uniche ad aver germogliato.

Domenica sono riuscito a trovare il tempo per un visitare il 3° Satsuki Bonsai Festival presso il garden bonsai Crespi. Putroppo a causa della mancanza di tempo non ho potuto seguire nessuno dei workshop anche se durante il mio giro ho potuto vedere il Maestro Gaetano Settembrini mentre teneva un corso di base sui bonsai a un gruppetto di amatori.

Vi posto alcune foto di alcuni dei magnifici esemplari presenti.

Sunday morning I have the opportunity to take a tour at the 3° Satsuki Bonsai Festival at the Crespi bonsai Garden. Due to the lack of time I cannot take part in any of the workshop but walking trough the garden I've noticed Master Gaetano Settembrini having an introduction class. 

Here there are some of the beautiful Satsuke trees that I could admire.

Eccomi, come da programma nel weekend ho fatto alcune nuove margotte. Le margotte sono state di nocciolo selvatico e di acero, le piante si trovano nel giardino del nostro amico Davide e io e Matteo abbiamo provato a trovare del buon materiale.
Il nocciolo selvatico sviluppa rami molto contorti e sinuosi, e pur essendo essi cilindrici, credo che col tempo riusciremo a ottenere delle belle piante.
Abbiamo fatto tre margotte così da averne una a testa, dopo aver terminato il lavoro ho cercato dell'altro materiale bonsaizzabile. L'occhio è caduto sul ramo basso di un acero rosso. La pianta in questione ha subito vari attacchi da parte del cane di Davide (che mangia tronco e rami) e così i rami bassi hanno assunto forme curiose. L'unico però che poteva essere margottato è un piccolo ramo con solo un ciuffetto di foglie all'apice e quindi non so se avrà la forza di portare avanti la margotta, per non parlare del fatto che quella caramella sul ramo sembra così attraente per il cane :)
Anche in questo caso non ci rimane che attendere.

As I've said before during the weekend i had the opportunity to make some air layerings. Thanks to Davide garden me and Matte can layer a wild hazelnut tree and i also create an red maple air layering.
Wild hazelnut has very twisted branches and even tough they are quite cilindric I think we can obtain some good material. After we have three alzenut layering i search for some more material and I found a red maple branch. This branch is from a maple that is the preferred victim of Davide's dog which keep on biting the trunk and the branches, so i found this only branch who could be interesting. There are a couple of issues that could affect the success, the first is the really small group of leaves on the top which maybe cannot provide enough energy, the second issue is Davide's dog which is literally in love with this tree and i don't know if my layer will be safe.

Sono stato un po' preso in questi giorni e non ho potuto scrivere. Vi aggiorno con le ultime novità: come previsto il ficus sta faticando a riprendersi dopo il rinvaso, sto comunque mantenendolo nelle condizioni di umidità e temperatura migliori possibili.
Buone notizie invece dal mandarino cinese che ha iniziato a cacciare nuovi germogli e, notizia molto positiva, lo sta facendo molto indietro sul ramo, praticamente all'altezza del primo internodo. Non si vede ancora nulla nella caramella della margotta ma è ovviamente troppo presto.
Non ho ancora avuto la possibilità di controllare la margotta di melo, vorrei verificare che la caramella trattenga l'acqua perché l'operazione di preparazione è stata molto scomoda (ero appollaiato sulla scala) quindi non so se sono riuscito a chiudere in maniera precisa l'involto.
Questa sera dovrei andare a trovare Paolo quindi posso verificare che sia tutto ok.
Il meteo ballerino (sole, vento, pioggia, fresco) sta "confondendo" un po' le piante e si notano alcune anomalie nello sviluppo. Tra l'altro ho riscontrato questo problema anche nelle piante da orto che ho seminato.
Nel fine settimana dovrei riuscire a margottare un nocciolo che un amico ha in cortile, non ho ancora visionato bene la pianta ma sono sicuro che qualche ramo potrebbe riservarmi qualche sorpresa.
C'è forse la possibilità di una margotta su un cipresso ma devo valutare bene in quanto il ramo ha un diametro molto grosso e si trova nella parte bassa dell'albero dove verosimilmente potrebbe prendere poca luce.
In ultimo, da sabato e per tutta la settimana ci sarà una mostra satsuki nella mia zona e spero di riuscire ad andare a dare un'occhiata.

I've been busy this week so i couldn't post as much as I would, so here I came with the latest news.
As expected the ficus is struggling to recover after repotting, however I costantly keep one eye on the enviorment conditions.
Good news from the kumquat, is sprouting right now and better than expected its doing it near the first branch internode. Can't see anything from the air-layering bag but it's too soon.
I haven't had the opportunity to check the apple layering, I would like to see if everything it's fine because when I prepared it i was in an uncomfortable position so i don't know if the job is done properly, this evening I will go to Paolo's and I will check if the humidity in the bag is still high.
The weather is still crazy... sun, rain, wind, cold and the plants are have some minor issues in the developing.
I also noticed this problem on the vegetable plants that i had seed for my garden.
In this weekend i will have the opportunity to prepare another air layering; a friend of us has an hazelnut tree on wich we can work on. I haven't see the tree already but I hope to find a couple of good branches.
Maybe there's the oportunity to layer a cypress but i have to think about it because the branch is really thick and its also in the lower part of the tree so i really don't know how much sun can get.
From this saturday and for a week on there's a satsuki exibition here nearby and I hope to save a couple of hours to go there and have a look.

Ho finalmente rinvasato il ficus, il tempo è un po' più caldo e umido e ciò dovrebbe aiutare la pianta in questa fase. Non ho mai rinvasato una pianta tropicale quindi sto curando attentamente la nebulizzazione delle foglie e l'umidità del terreno.
Durante il rinvaso ho rimosso parte dei rami e le radici aeree ma ho lasciato quasi per intero l'apparato radicale della pianta in quanto era ridotto ai minimi termini.
Ora vediamo se l'ambiente caldo e umido in cui l'ho sistemata la farà attecchire.

At last I've repot the ficus, weather is warmer and the humidity is a little bit higher so the condition should be fine for this job. It's the first time that i repot a tropical tree so i really don't know the ficus feedbacks, and for this fact i'm controlling every once in a while the humidity.
During the repot I've cut the air roots and part of the branches, instead i leave almost all the roots because they ar a few,
Now lets see if the enviorment is correct for this species.

Un'altra margotta!
Ieri sera sono andato dal mio amico Paolo, che ha un bellissimo giardino con molte piante da frutto, a tentare una nuova margotta. Durante l'inverno avevamo potato una parte delle sue piante e lavorando sul melo notai questo ramo e decisi che sarebbe stato una buona base per una margotta per ottenere un bonsai. Constatato che il ramo non sarebbe servito alla struttura della pianta ho aspettato il momento adatto e ieri sera ho eseguito il lavoro.
La posizione non è comoda e nell'eventualità di una riuscita della margotta togliere la porzione di ramo non sarà per niente facile, ma è un problema che ci si porrà più avanti.

Another air layering!
Yesterday evening I've visited my friend Paolo, who owns a beautiful garden with many fruit trees, to try a new air layering on an apple.
During the winter I've helped him pruning his trees and during this operation I've noticed this branch (which by the way we would have had to cut) and I thought that would be a good base for a layering, so I waited till the warmer season to give it a try.
The branch, obviusly, isn't in a comfortable position so in case of succes the removal operation will be quite difficult but this is a problem to which in the future I would think.

Ecco un'altra pianta che è con me da un paio di anni. Si tratta di una Fortunella (o kumquat o mandarino cinese). Mia mamma la trovò in un garden, era tutta piena di piccoli mandarini e decise di prenderla, (capita spesso di trovare queste piccole piante di agrumi cariche di frutti e che poi puntualmente non ne sviluppano più).
Per un paio di anni non è stata al centro dei miei interessi anche se ad ogni modo ogni tanto le davo una spuntata e controllavo come si sviluppasse la fase vegetativa.
A inizio anno l'ho sfoltita un pochino, decidendo in quella fase che avrei provato a ottenerne qualcosa, all'inizio pensavo di rinvasarla e lasciarla sviluppare. Il tronco però è clamorosamente cilindrico e la pianta risultava anche troppo alta, così ho deciso per qualcosa di più drastico.
   Faccio una breve premessa, sia online che chiedendo a qualche amico non ho trovato nozioni definite per gli agrumi in generale e sulla fortunella in particolare (ovviamente per quanto riguarda i bonsai).
Rinvasi, margotte, fasi vegetative e di riposo sono argomenti su cui ho trovato opinioni varie sui forum quindi affronto questo lavoro proprio come un esperimento eseguito su una piantina senza molto valore (ma che sembra avere un buon stato di forma).
Ad ogni modo settimana scorsa ho rimosso i frutti e dato una potata molto importante tentando di stimolare la pianta a vegetare.
Oggi invece ho eseguito una margotta per abbassare tutta la pianta e per sfruttare la maggiore dimensione del tronco della zona nella quale sono intervenuto. Questa zona presenta appunto un ingrossamento sfruttabile per formare una sorta di piede e credo che lo stesso sia determinato forse da un innesto precedente eseguito sulla pianta.
Pubblico qualche foto, speriamo di ottenere dei risultati.

This is another tree that is in my collection since a couple of years: is a Kumquat (or cumquat in some areas) which is the common name of the Fortunella tree.
My mum bought it in a garden center, at first i didn't considered it very much, and i limit to check out its growing and seldomly cut away the excess of foliage.
At the begin of this year i've pruned it and decided that i want to treat it as a real bonsai.
At first i thougth in a repotting and a free growing for some time, but i had to face the fact that the trunk is very cilindric and the plant too tall. So i decide for something more drastic.
   I have something to specific: surfing on line and asking around I couldn't find a unique "way of work" for the citrus like plants. Repottings, layerings, prunings are matter of discussion for bonsaist. So I did this job as an experiments, not worrying too much about the tree, which is by the way a cheap tree.
Altought its lack of value the tree is in good health so i've started my work.
So a week ago i removed all the fruits and i proceed to an hard pruning, and today i layered the plant.
I've layered the fortunella in a zone where the trunk is thicker (maybe is the place where has been grafted).

Vi presento le ultime arrivate nella mio gruppetto di piante. Si tratta di giovanissime (uno o due anni) piante di vite (Vitis vinifera). Il mio amico Paolo le ha trovate e raccolte nel suo cortile.
Ovviamente sono piccole piantine gracili ma può darsi che si possa ottenere dei buoni mame o magari delle figure prostrate... Vedremo tra qualche anno...

Sta finalmente arrivando il periodo per le margotte, quindi a breve ci sarà molto da fare e da riportare.


These picture portrait my last entries. As you can see are you (one or two years old) grapevine (vitis vinifera). My friend Paolo found them in his garden and collect them.
Are just all little trees but maybe in a few year i can obtain some mame or even some larger bonsai.
