Bonsai quando posso

Idee, Bonsai e Prebonsai

Cleaned

Published by Unknown under , , , , on 13:15

I've cleaned up my larch stump, I removed weeds and dry branches, I've also fixed the substrate which wasn't well good placed under the roots.
I've cut away alle the dry branches and stumps.
Now the plants is lighter and it can breath better.
I want to make a draw to decide which branches are better to keep or to cut for the future design.

Raw material

A new comer: a larch stump. I've purchased it for the upcoming masterclass at the Bonsai Do Groane Club. The ratio between the big frontal root and the branches give to the plant a unique front.
The plant is yet to clean to decide a design. Apparently isn't in a great shape but I think that it can be used for the masterclass.
In a few days I'll clean it, and remove the dry parts.

Fixing holes

Published by Unknown under , on 18:24

I was wandering trough my plants the other day and I took a look at the ash and at its hole, I always though that I would make a sabamiki with it but the recent ideas that were given me on the trident maple made my change my mind.
Maybe even this plant can be treated to make the hole close, ash is vigorous tree so I think that the result could be fast and nice.
In a future meeting with the bonsai club guys I will take the plant to get some hints. I have to understand if this ash need to be put in the ground to achieve this goal or maybe a strong feed cultivation can do the trick.

Risks

Published by Unknown under , , , , , on 22:27

During the mulberry movements I also took care of the others layerings.
As seen from the photos neither plants develop roots so good that you can deal with separation from layering safely. On the other hand the plant were root exposed and with a uncomfortable winter to approach. So I decide to took some risks.
I cut the layerings and put them in pots.
Trident has been pruned during the works but it should be a strong variety and the roots apparel was the best of the twos. I'm confident about this plant.
Palmatum (this is the air layering work) have some more problems, if you knew my blog you know that on this maple has benn applied so much stress. The plant has recived treatments during the last four years without having any stressless year, So even though the layering has develop only a couple of roots I've moved it.The higher part (I whished my layering has worked high there) is already going dry.
I'm runnng risks with low budget found around plants. But in every case I will learn something.
I'm watching really carfully to the waterings and I'm also feeding the plants with f66 phyto stimulator.

Some pics... I will take some others early

Trident in summer

Look the good foliage in late april, nowadays is a lame green, the plant appear tired.
Don't know if it can survive.

Future of the trident

During the last evening at the bonsai club i brought my latest purchase, the trident maple. I had the opportunity to talk about the plant and its issues.
Issues that are rapresented by the large cuttings and the hole made by the previous owner.
Two solutions were brought up, each one of them has its pro and cons.
First one is a long term project which will bring the plant to fix all the scars.
The second one is focused on created a sabamiki style using the existing cuttings.
I want to explain you the first option (the second will only be analized without the leaves), the work should be from 3 to 5 years long only for the first step.
In the first year
-Spring pruning and branch selection
-Scar cleaning, then the hole will be filled with concrete.
-Repotting in a large pot with holes (the root should be able to pass trough them) putting the roots in the best position
-Put the pot into the ground.
-then the plant will be free to grow.
The second year
-Spring pruning and scar cleaning.
-Roots check (no plant removing)
-Free grown.
From the third year I can decide if the plants need some more time into pure soil or if can be repotted in a working pot.
In the moment that the plant will be in the pot the styling work can be started.

A new hope

Something really nice has happened today.
Maybe you remember that I've almost lost hopes for the mulberry layering, I link you to the page where I mention it, you'll find the info in the last part of the post.
What I haven't wrote it's that one afternoon in july I decide to open the layer, scrap some more bark add some sphagnus and close back the layering.
My thought was that since the layering didn't go well but it was still there I could do a little attemp just to try.
Today I moved to the plant to remove the layering and prepare the plant for the season change and with so much surprise I found some new roots right on the new layering part.
Looking at the pictures you can notice that the roots are small but I decide for a quick maintenance repot.
I just cut a little the original roots and put the plant in a draining but with some humidity capacity soil.
I put some large pumice in the pot the around the roots a more rich substrate with also sphagnum and soil. And then some more sphagnum on the top of the pot.
The plant is in a good shape and I'm am confident that the new roots can grow enough to cut away the lower part of the trunk.

Planning

Published by Unknown under on 20:35

The weather is slowly turning fresher and the end summer work are arriving.
Since the last week I've started feeding the plants. I've found a good pellets which has high titulation for phosphorus and potassium.
Looking at the plants I've started to think about the future projects and I decide that some of the plants are going to be put in the pure soil of my garden.
Some of the really needs a rest period after all my unexperienced cure some others are going there because they just need to grow bigger.
... and the nominees are: Montepellier Maple, Chestnut, Alder (glutinosa imperialis), some Pseudoplatanus maple and .... and Maybe the Fuji Prunus.
Montpellier has been lowered, shortened, cutted, pruned etc... so it needs to regain strenght. Moreover the nebari looks nice but need a treatment to be wided.
Chestnut destiny is to became a multiple trunk or a clump, so the base need to be big.
The Alder was purchased with the idea to develop a shohin but its curious leaves made me change my mind, the tree need to be big to have equilibrium, the plant grow fast so planting in soil appear to be a good idea.
I've got plenty of Pseudoplatanus and Quercus in my garden so some of them will be put there.
I really don't know now what to do about my prunus. At the moment all the leaves are on so I can't see the trunk. Only in autumn I will decide what to do with this one.
