New comers

Published by Unknown under , , , , , , on 20:35

So these are some new comers. Almost all are yamadori that I've collected. It's a little bit late but I was't sure to have another possibility to get them.
Three of them are structured as the pics shows, otherwise the others are just young plants. They should be all maples.
There is also a pear marcot (is the first trunk on the left of the first picture), this one did not develop a strong root apparel but I hope to save it.

Long term air layering

Published by Unknown under , , , , , on 13:10

Today a mulberry and a pyracantha with similar stories.
Both of them were air layered two years ago to obtain a better root structure,
Both of them suffered because the cutted rings weren't done properly and so the roots did not show up.
So, this year I done again the layering and apparently it work very well. (thanks to Davide for the pyracantha layering since he done it, I was too tired that evening).
I think that both can survive the repot even though the fixation isn't that good due to the lack of strong roots to use.
Mulberry is in a pot that I purchased at Arco Bonsai.

About the birch

Published by Unknown under , , , on 11:00

Did some works on the birch, after this spring piching some branches spread back buds so i could do a light pruning toprepare the plant for the summertime.
I took away the air layering (the roots were already showing trough the plastic) even if it isn't the most proper moment but i choose to focus on the tree right balance of strenght.
I put the new plant obtained in a pot with pumice and some musk to preserve humidity but with a good draining.
I placed it in a cooler part pf the garden.
With the guys at the club we were studying some odeas to improve the quality of this birch. Maybe some graftings or a new change of apex to create a better conicity.

On the birch

Taking a cue from the considerations made the other day about the birch I decide to prepare another air layering.
Since I need to lower the apex I try a layering to take away a small plant from the top. When this will be ready I will define my apex cut.
Thi tree branches have leaves really far from the trunk so with manuring and pinching I'm trying to push the plant to produce more internal buds.
I also bend the lower branch with a wire because of its attack angle.

Trying to save a memory

Altre tre margotte.

Three new air layerings. Different from the ones in the previous post for a couple of reason.
In these cases I work on actual trees to obtain new material.
Second reason is a bit emotive since I layered plant from the garden where I grew up.
First two layerings are from an apricot tree that belong to the garden from 25 years.
The tree is suffering since a couple of year, maybe for the oldness so I decided to try to save two branches.
Third one is a pear. I've already tried an air layering on this plant which survived for a couple of years but it did never develop a reasonable root apparel.
As I had musk, perlite and everything I need I decided try again.

Three different ones

Published by Unknown under , , , , , , , on 22:59

Nell'ordine Celtis, Robinia e Gelso.

Really quick,
Three ai layering on small plants, my intent is to have a better root structure for the nebari.
I did the cuttings in order to have the largest trunk diameter possible, not caring about the plant inclination.
I put musk nearby the trunk and I filled the bag with Perlite (it's the first time I use it).
Celtis, Locust tree and Mulberry.

At least I've learned something

a

It wouldn't be correct to report only the successful works. So, as I did sometimes in the past, I am here to write about a failure.
A few days ago I wrote about how I was worried for the health of the palmatum maple that were layered.
Yesterday I did a couple of cuttings only to find dry wood, I removed the plant from the pot to check the roots. Those few roots were rot, apparently the plant never caught on.
I'm so embitterd, this particular plant remind me about the first major work done on a plant in company of some friends that helped me out. The first repot took us an entire afternoon of work. That day is reported here.
So what happened?
I came to the conclusion that I made two mistakes on this plant, the second has been amplified by the first one.
First: I never let a full recovery season to this maple to regain power. For four straight years I work on it and the plant suffered for this.
Then I did a pretty bad air layering, indeed it was an uncomfortable but I did not do a good job, I'm sure I haven't applied a good quantity of wet material such as sphagnum.
Maybe with a stronger plant it could work, surely not the case. Other thing that I though is that I could protect the layer an leave it there for another year, who knows.
Bad errors, now I can understand the importance of the growing year.

Ther was nothing to do
A pic from the repotting day

Mulberry Layering

Published by Unknown under , , , on 15:26

Another air layering, this time on the mulberry, I've made it yesterday. I follow Master Gaetano Settembrini hints, esing the larger part of the trunk, by this way I will obtain a lower plant with a better nebari (at least is what I hope).
For the substrate I mixed pumice and soil and it has to be costantly watered to keep an high humidity level.

Some works

Published by Unknown under , , , , , , , on 22:32

Siamo passati poi agli aceri.

Yesterday I was with my friend Matteo and we prepared some layerings.
First his pomegranate, I have layered this plant some years ago and then gave it to him. Now we prepared a layering in the largest point of the trunk. If it will work the plant will be put in a large pot to grow freely.
Then we layered two maples.
Acer palmatum had two layerings. One where the trunk divide in two (This part of the plant should be cut so I try a layer to abtain a second tree). Into the plastic bag  I put some very wet sphagnus.
The second layering is in the lower part, I do the same to the trident maple, and in the pot I added pumice and sphagnus.
