My mixed forest

I boschetti e soprattutto i boschetti misti mi hanno sempre affascinato moltissimo. Sin da quando mi sono avvicinato ai bonsai questi piccole foreste mi sono sempre apparse come una meravigliosa rappresentazione della natura attorno a me. Inoltre l'assieme delle strutture delle piante che si devono adattare a stare assieme è al contempo semplice e complicato, e se ben fatto, molto molto evocativo.
Insomma era da tempo che ne progettavo uno.
Partendo dai miei molti aceri ho tentato di riprodurre in parte la natura delle mie zone.
Ho quindi unito varie specie che se pur con le loro differenze avrebbero potuto adattarsi ad un ambiente costrittivo come quello del vaso e che al contempo sarebbero state rappresentative.
Dicevo degli aceri, crescono naturalmente nel mio giardino grazie a un paio di piante madri del vicino che mi regalano moltissimi semi.
Le più importanti di questo vaso hanno già almeno 5 anni.

I always be fascinated by forest and even more by mixed forest, ever since I started to approach the bonsai culture this little woods seemed to me the most brillant rappresentation of the surrounding nature.
The whole ensamble of this "adapted to live toghether" plants is both simple and complicated and, if well done, very evocative.
So it was since a long time that I was planning.
I started with my plenty maples I tried to replicate local woods.
I choose some species that can fit togheter in a pot even with different caratheristics.
Talking about my maples: they grow freely in my garden thanks to a mother plant in the neighbour garden.
Larger maples in this forest are five or six years old.

Durante il raduno UBI di un paio di anni fa a Torino avevo trovato un vaso con una decina di betulle per un prezzo ragionevole, le ho prese perché mi piaceva molto l'essenza senza avere un progetto definito in mente. 

L'estate scorsa, dopo il rinvaso le piante che avevo messo in akadama pura hanno sofferto molto e alcune non sono sopravvissute... almeno ho scoperto che betulle e akadama fine non vanno d'accordo.

During the UBI bonsai event in Turin of a couple of years ago I purchased a pot of birches. I liked the essence and I bought them, that's it. With no intended purposes.

After the last spring repot some of them dried out, all of the dead plants were in pure small akadama. Never again.

A questo punto ho acquistato dei Carpini Bianchi (tre anni circa) e delle Querce Rosse Americane (tre anni la grande e uno le piccole), i primi sono endemici dei miei boschi, mentre le querce sono state importate nei secoli e sono ormai stabili in zona.

Sono le piante sulla sinistra del bosco. 

Ad accompagnare le betulle ci sono delle farnie (boschetto tipico della zona), anche per queste devo ringraziare il mio vicino, Piantine piccole di uno o due anni.
Non ho foto da mostrare di queste tre specie prima del bosco.

Then I bought Hornbeams (three years plants) and some Red American Oaks (three and one years for them). Hornbeams are endemical in my area, Red Oaks were imported during the past century and they became also typical. Those are the trees on the leftside.
Birches goes along English Oaks here, and I really have to thank again my neighbour and all the seed I can collect from him.
Those are one or two years old plant.
I don't have any photo of them before the forest.


Per completare ho aggiunto delle piante da sottobosco, tre le ho raccolte in natura ma avendole prelevate in autunno non so dire di che specie siano. 
Oltre a quelle anche un piccolo agrifoglio.
Sul limitare del bosco a sinistra c'è un piccolissimo pioppo di un anno, era in un vasetto... e mi spiaceva non aggiungerlo.

To complete it I added some underbush. three small leaflings collected in autumn last year wich I couldn't identify clearly.
In my garden there was the smallest of the holly so I decided to add it.
On the extreme leftside I placed a very little populus tree, it was in a little pot, and so seemed to me just fair to give it a chance.

Prima di partire col lavoro ho guardato, riguardato studiato soluzioni, ho valutato se aggiungere piante diverse (ho soppesato salici, faggi, platani) che poi per motivi tecnici o estetici ho deciso di evitare.

Ho anche scattato qualche foto che per quanto provvisoria e con i vasi larghi mi permetteva di farmi un idea. Mi sono segnato anche i vasi numerandoli per potermi muovermi meglio al momento del rinvaso.

Before the work had begun I watched, studied, decided what plant to choose.

Willows, beeches and sycamores where valued but for a reason or another they didn't fit into the project.

Even tough the pictures were taken with original large pots they helped me to understand what to do. I numered the pots to remember the positionig.

Prima di tutto (beh siamo a metà post) devo assolutamente ringraziare il mio amico Francesco per avermi aiutato in questo lavoro, da solo no sarei mai riuscito!

Sono partito con la preparazione del vaso (ho usato quello un po' più largo per il frassino, peccato), ho messo la retina e preparato qualche filo di ancoraggio, pur sapendo che è molto difficile legare bene nei boschetti, fissare almeno un po' le piante è sempre un bene.

Ho preparato anche un substrato misto comprendente anche terriccio, un terreno sciolto ma che non portasse il rischio di secchezza repentina.

First of all I have to really thank my friend Francesco which helped me a lot trought the work, without him I would never make it.

I prepared the pot (I wish I had a larger one, but I used the programmed pot for the ash tree) with draining nets and wirings, I know it's hard to tie up the plant in a forest but at least something can be fixed.

I prepared a mixed substrate with some soil also, to prevent dryness.

A questo punto abbiamo cominciato a togliere le piante dai vasi, seguendo la numerazione per evitare di lasciare all'aria le piante molto tempo.

Dopo le prime estratte ho iniziato a posizionarle mentre Francesco mi preparava le altre da aggiungere.

At this time we started to unpot the trees, we followed the pictures and numbers to choose the plants and let them out as less as possible.

In fact as Francesco was unpotting I started to position the trees.

Il lavoro è stato complicato dalle dimensioni del vaso e da alcune delle piante. Alcune di esse hanno un apparato radicale molto risicato altri sovradimensionati.

La posizione delle piante è state ottenuta in parte tramite il fissaggio in parte comprimendo bene il substrato.

Il disegno finale non è perfetto, in foto poi si perde molto la profondità, ma sono sicuro che col tempo e con l'osservazione potrò migliorarlo, Andando anche ad agire sull'inclinazione di alcune piante.

Ho aggiunto abbondante sfagno per salvaguardare le radici. Per ora ho deciso di tenere il boschetto in un ambiente più caldo e umido (senza esagerare) per dare la possibilità alle radici di recuperare.

Come potete vedere alcune piante hanno già emesso le foglie ma ho preferito aspettare il rinvaso fino a che le querce gonfiassero le gemme. Spero di aver indovinato le tempistiche e che tutte le piante possano riprendersi al meglio.

Work was complicated by pot dimension and by some of the trees. Some of them presented over growed root apparel or only a few small roots.

I placed the trees using the wire and fixed by adding and pressing the soil.

Final design is far from perfect (in pictures depth is loss) but I'm confident that with observation and work I can improve it.

Roots are overly covered with sphagnum to prevent dryness. 

I placed the composition in a warmer and humid room to help the plants.

As you can see some of the plants already have leaves, Oaks are swelling bud only now so I tought this was the best period.

Now I have to leave the trees free, as they can regain power.
